Over time, factors such as sun exposure, age and heredity cause the skin to wrinkle and lose its fullness. Softening facial lines and restoring volume back to the face can rejuvenate your skin and create a more youthful look. In addition to our surgical procedures for facial rejuvenation, we offer Bay Area residents several non-surgical therapies to refresh your appearance. Dr. Lim and Dr. Weintraub will perform a facial analysis during your consultation to determine the treatment that best meets your individual needs.

Injectable Dermal Fillers
Injectable fillers are used to instantly fill in and smooth out wrinkles and folds in your face. While these products will not stop the natural aging process, they are used to restore volume in the face to create a more youthful look. Dermal fillers can be used to:
- Plump the lips
- Soften facial folds, lines and wrinkles
- Improve the appearance of depressed scars
Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in our bodies, and therefore does not require allergy testing. It is commonly used to plump thin lips and fill facial creases such as the folds between the nose and mouth. It may also be used to improve the appearance of depressed scars. Depending on the product used, the results last 4 - 8 months. Examples of hyaluronic acid products include Restylane®, Perlane®, Juvéderm® and Prevelle®.
Calcium hydroxylapatite is a mineral-like compound found naturally in our bodies. Of all the dermal fillers, it is the thickest product, and best to fill deeper creases such as the lines between the nose and mouth, the lines of the lower face, and creases around the mouth. It may also be used to restore volume to the cheek region and other areas of the face. A commonly used calcium hydroxylapatite product is Radiesse®.
Skin Resurfacing
Skin resurfacing is performed to rejuvenate and clarify facial skin, giving it a smoother, more even appearance. Several techniques can be used to resurface the skin, including dermabrasion, chemical peels and Fraxel laser.
What conditions are treated with skin resurfacing?
- Wrinkles: Wrinkles that are present with facial expression as well as wrinkles that are visible without facial movement are improved by resurfacing.
- Pigmentation: Freckles, sun spots, melasma, or other darkened areas of skin are lightened.
- Scars: Concave scarring that results from injuries or from acne may be decreased by skin resurfacing. This often requires several treatments to achieve the desired result.
- Vascular conditions: Small blood vessels on the skin and facial redness can be improved by skin resurfacing
- Poor skin tone: Loss of the supportive skin structure including collagen and elastin can cause facial skin to droop. Resurfacing can tighten the skin, improve tone and enhance texture.
Dermabrasion
Dermabrasion resurfaces the top layers of skin through a method of controlled surgical scraping. The treatments create a more even contour of the skin by reducing surface irregularities left by scars and wrinkles. Important factors to determine if dermabrasion is right for you include your skin type, coloring, and medical history. People with darker complexions are at higher risk for pigmentation changes following dermabrasion and may be better candidates for other skin resurfacing techniques.

Chemical peels
A chemical peel uses a chemical solution to remove the outer layers of skin to improve blemishes, reduce uneven pigmentation and enhance the texture of your skin. Chemical peels range in strength from mild to quite strong. Dr. Lim and Dr. Weintraub will analyze your skin and determine which formula is most appropriate to meet your needs. The main types of chemical peels used are phenol, trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and alphahydroxy acids (AHAs).

Fraxel Laser
Fraxel is a laser used to treat sun damage by selectively targeting the aged skin cells. The advantage of Fraxel laser is that it does not damage normal skin thereby minimizing downtime associated with the procedure. Fraxel laser resurfaces skin to improve brown spots, acne scars, wrinkles and rough spots. Recent evidence even shows Fraxel to be effective in reducing the appearance of stretch marks. Fraxel tends to be less painful than other lasers and effectively resurfaces skin for a smoother, more even appearance.
During your consultation, Dr. Lim and Dr. Weintraub will determine which skin resurfacing technique is right for you and create an individualized plan to suit your needs.
